Algorithm Interview Pattern Roadmap: What to Practice First

The refreshed Wayback CDX export for interviewbits.com still shows an archived algorithms category page at /blog/categories/algorithms/, but it does not surface any new unpublished 2014-2015 problem posts beyond the set already recovered on AlgoDrills. That is still enough to publish something useful: a roadmap that turns the verified archive topics into a practical study order.

If you are preparing for interviews, the problem is usually not finding *a* question. The problem is choosing a sequence that teaches reusable patterns instead of random tricks.

Start With Search Spaces

Begin with problems where the state is small and the branching rule is obvious. These problems teach how to represent a partial answer and extend it step by step.

These are good first drills because the correctness argument is visual. You can explain what each recursive level means, what a completed path represents, and why every valid result appears exactly once.

Add Interval and Ordering Problems

Once search-space problems feel mechanical, move to array transformations where correctness depends on maintaining a loop invariant.

These questions are useful because they shift the interview discussion from "can you generate all answers?" to "can you preserve the right structure while scanning the input once?"

Practice Candidate-Elimination Patterns

Many interview questions look different on the surface but hide the same idea: one pass can remove impossible answers until only one candidate remains.

When you study these problems, focus on the invariant that justifies discarding information. If you cannot explain why a candidate is impossible, the optimization is not interview-safe.

Cover Numeric and Bitwise Reasoning

Numeric problems often test whether you can replace a black-box library call with a controlled search or arithmetic transformation.

This group is valuable because it forces you to justify edge cases. Overflow, integer truncation, and off-by-one behavior matter more than elegant syntax.

Add Geometry and Spatial Queries Later

Geometry questions are worth doing, but they are usually not the best first practice set. They add coordinate reasoning on top of the algorithm itself.

Treat these as second-pass practice after arrays, intervals, and elimination problems are comfortable. Otherwise you may spend too much time on representation details before the core interview habits are stable.

A Practical Four-Session Order

If you want a concrete weekly sequence, use this:

1. Search spaces: keypad, power set, backtracking vs iterative generation. 2. Structural arrays: insert interval, plus/minus array, sort by length and frequency. 3. Elimination and state tracking: celebrities, car race, log every second. 4. Numeric and spatial reasoning: square root, bitwise arithmetic, weighted random, center points, rectangles store.

The goal is not to memorize answers. The goal is to notice that many interview prompts reduce to a small number of repeatable moves:

  • grow a partial solution
  • maintain a loop invariant
  • eliminate impossible candidates
  • binary-search a monotonic answer space
  • aggregate enough state to answer future queries cheaply

What to Write Down After Each Drill

After solving a problem, record four things:

  • the state you maintained
  • the invariant that stayed true
  • the step where wrong candidates were discarded or merged
  • the reason this pattern would transfer to another problem

That short review is usually more valuable than re-reading the full solution. It turns one question into a reusable template.

What the CDX Refresh Changed

The July 21, 2026 CDX refresh confirmed the old algorithms category page still exists in the archive and confirmed again that the known 2014-2015 algorithm posts are the clean, relevant set. It did not reveal a new unpublished algorithm-interview article that met the exact-CDX bar.

That means the right publishing move is not to force a weak recovery. It is to keep expanding original, pattern-first guides that sit on top of the verified archive set and help readers connect the problems they are already using.
